Akbar Nazary, Resident Steward and First Counselor to the President, was seriously injured while cutting a large tree near Aravaipa Canyon. This wood is used exclusively for Spirit Walk fires. He was injured last Monday, around noon, March 1 and transported by helicopter to University of Arizona Medical Trauma Center in Tucson. His injuries include 12 broken ribs, several cracked vertebrae, lung contusion, and a cut above his right eye. He has had one surgery on his spine.

California Legislation SB 519, introduced by Senator Wiener last week, has been carefully crafted to avoid Native American opposition on the subject of Peyote, but it ignores the dilemma for all Peyotists that Peyote is an endangered species. Peyote-centered worship cannot exist without Peyote, and for many the only way to practice their religion is to cultivate the sacred Peyote plant.
